The Pea-Jacket (VAREUSE ) was the sailors' work clothing, which they made themselves in the sail remnants; they had the assurance of a resistant garment and to optimize their expensive sailcloth. The pea jacket (VAREUSE) was comfortable, waterproof and windproof.
Each port had its own color; sometimes, in certain regions, the sea trades had their own colour of pea jacket: yellow for the foot fishermen, rust for the trap fishermen, red for the oyster farmers, blue for the deep-sea fishermen.
The closing button was originally sewn on the inside to prevent sailors from clinging to ropes, halyards and other lines. In addition, it has two inside pockets, according to tradition, one for the tobacco reserve and another for the notebook where everyone wrote down their catch of the day.
