The Red Wing 877 was introduced by Red Wing Shoes in the fall of 1952. The 8-inch Red Wing 877 was designed as a hunting boot.
The Red Wing 877 was soon nicknamed the "Irish Setter" because of its similarity to the coat color of the pointing dog of the same name, which was intended to assist any hunter on his hunting outing.
In 2013, Red Wing launched a new leather for the 877: Oro-Legacy leather in homage to the history of the 877 and 875 boots based on designs from the Red Wing archives.
Oro-Legacy leather is based on the leather of the legendary Red Wing Irish Setter boots of the 1970s. As no pigments are added during the finishing process of Red Wing leather, the natural character of the leather is enhanced.
